Decided today that I needed to make a new wreath for the front porch.
Last Fall while at Canton Trade Days, I purchased one of these old bedspring wire wreaths. I think they are so cute. My initial plan was to just put the red and white checked burlap ribbon bow on it (got it at HL). But, after putting on the bow, decided it needed more color. So, I added a couple of bright yellow sunflowers and leaves. Like it much better.
The Spirea is really blooming in the back yard.
My Hostas are peeking out from the dirt. This pot of hostas was from my Mom and Dad's home. It has to be at least 25-30 years old. I know it needs to be separated but don't know how to do it. Anybody know how and when???
Someone told me to just take an axe and chop it up into small clumps. I am so afraid that I will do something to it to ruin it. But, I know it's too crowded and needs something done to it.
Enjoy!
Till next time, Judy
Judy..I love that wreath. You are just too clever. xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteOh...Judy! Your wreath is absolutely wonderful! I love the bright red checked bow. What a delightful creation...You are such a talented lady.
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring!

Spring is in the air...
ReplyDeleteLove your wreath!!!
Liked the garden walk. I went on one today too with DGS. Break from rain, a bit of sunshine, lots of cold wind, but did get some pictures.

Judy,
ReplyDeleteI want your bed spring wreath, I love it. May have to find an old mattress.
I'll show you how to separate the hostas. I wonder if any of the hostas I planted last year made it? Hm. That means I'll have to clean up more out there so I can see...
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Ha! How inventive is that?! Love it Judy, especially with your sunflowers added. Oh my, spirea in bloom and hosta's peeking out from the earth; it will be awhile before I see that around here so thanks for sharing your pictures :O) Deb
ReplyDeleteForgot to say the wreath is beautiful. You need just how much to add and when to quit. I guess that's not me. Got sidelined by the hostas.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
You got that at Canton? OK, I'm going to have to find one. It's adorable!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, I love this wreath! I've never seen one like it before. It's so clever. Of course, red gingham is perfect!
ReplyDeleteYour wreath is remarkable! You should google how to divide your plant silly! I google everything!
ReplyDeletebig hugs,
Cheryl
I just love your "spring" wreath!!
ReplyDeleteI love the wreath...and hostas are the most forgiving plant on earth...you should take it out of the pot now and use an axe or shovel to chop the root ball into at least 4 pieces and then re-plant them either into more pots or into the ground. Before you know it they will be lovely. If you wait too much longer to divide the plant the leaves will be droopy.

Judy- I love the wreath- I see it is starting to look like Spring at your house- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteA wreath from a bed spring! How unique! It turned out adorable! I just dug up my hostas and used a shovel to separate. They thrived beautifully.
ReplyDeleteJudy, I LOVE your wreath! It is so, so pretty!
ReplyDeleteJudy the wreath is so cute! Great job and so springy!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Linda
Your pretty wreath made my heart skip a beat! I love red checked anything & sunflowers.
ReplyDeleteSmiles,

I haven't seen those wreaths before! What you did with it is so cute!
ReplyDeleteCheery wave!

Hi Judy, this is the first time that I have ever seen a bed-spring wire wreath . . . I love it, and the way you decorated it is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a pleasure to knock on your front door :)
Have a marvelous weekend,
Your blogging sister, Connie
Judy that wreathe is too cute. I've never seen one like it before either. The sunflower and red ribbon really sets it off.
ReplyDeleteBest use of old springs I've seen yet! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThat is a super cute wreath!
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor has a Spirea that I get to enjoy and it's in full bloom. What a gorgeous spring blooming shrub!
You are amazing with that wreath, wish I had your artistic bent. At our old home we had a Hosta and it grew and grew. It became so big, I had my husband dig up a small part of it and we planted that elsewhere, and it began to grow and grow ... I can't remember what time of year, you could probably Google it. Mary
ReplyDeleteI love it Judy.
ReplyDeleteLove love love your wreath!
ReplyDeleteLove that creative wreath...so cute.
ReplyDeleteNormally hosta's should be divided in the fall, just when the leaves turn color and start to die down.
But since your pot is so overcrowded, go ahead and get a sharp knife, I always used a serrated bread knife.
To make it a little easier to cut through the soil, and roots, water well before taking it out of the pot. And just cut it into quarters...replant, water well, keep in a cool shady place for a few weeks, and you will see signs of it growing soon.
If you can cut between the "eyes" try and do that, but if you can't don't worry. I've split so many of my hostas and they do fine.
Jen
Spring has certainly sprung at your house! How adorable!
ReplyDeleteHostas? You can't harm them. Take a sharp shovel and divide them NOW. This is the perfect time, before their leaves unfurl!
The wreath turned out really cute. I love it. It must be so nice to have things blooming. We are still under a pile of snow in Ontario. Deb
ReplyDeleteOh Judy ~ that bed spring wreath is adorable. Great Job! I can tell you this ~ I am planning to go to Canton with you one of these days!
ReplyDeleteBig Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
If you have things blooming and sprouting, and you are only a few hours south of me, then there is hope for spring for us on the horizon. Sadly, not this weekend, as more snow is expected. I love your bedspring wreath. Really cute way to repurpose those pieces.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of a bed spring wreath - but I fell right in love with it. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a wreath this unique! I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great and original idea. it looks so pretty
ReplyDeleteYou won't harm the hosta, Judy. Go for it. My hostas are one of the delights of this garden. Some were here when we moved in and I added the others.
ReplyDeleteLove, love your wreath - the perfect mix of industrial and pretty.
Thanks so much for joining in this week!

Hostas are so forgiving....just slice them apart with a sharp tool and plant the divisions. They will live...you can do it in spring (before they get big leaves..so they look pretty) or in the fall. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteBalisha
Cheeky!
ReplyDeleteNothing says Spring Wreath like a 'spring' wreath. I love it!
I think it is so nice that you have that pot of hostas from Mom and Dad.
I say... split it up, can't hurt and you'll soon have twice the bounty and be doubly blessed!
Pat,via MHC
I adore your wreath, so much fun.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have the Hostas from your parents home. (I brought home the Iris and daffodil bulbs from my parents and planted them but they look sad.)
Wishing you much good luck with them, such a lovely thing to have them continue on with you!
What a great idea for a wreath. I hadn't seen those before. Love the red checked ribbon and sunflowers on it.
ReplyDeleteLove the sunny wreath! You can easily divide your hostas without hurting them a bit! Chopping them in chunks will work, or you can dump out the pot, shake off the excess soil, put the plants into a tub of water and wash off most of the soil...then tease apart the plants. you can plant them in the ground or in a pot with fresh soil.
ReplyDeleteSaw your post on A Favorite Thing! I would love to have you share this on The Creative HomeAcre Hop today!

The wreath is beautiful, Judy! And using the bedsprings that way is such a cute idea!! I have a few things coming up in my garden but until the cold recedes for good, there isn't much I can do yet. But soon!
