A Wooden Treasure and A Feathered Treasure

I have two treasures to share with you today.  First, the wooden one.  I found this in an antique store in Chouteau, OK called Cherry's.  If you are ever in northeastern Oklahoma, this is right off of Highway 412 in this little town.

I go there often because between there and Pryor, OK (where I grew up and where the real 20 North Ora is located) is a Fabricut fabric outlet.

Anyway, this darling cabinet was in a booth and caught my attention.  The amazing thing is it's size.  It stands 39" tall and is 19" across at the bottom.  So, it is a very substantial piece.

When I first saw it, my initial reaction was that I would get it and repaint it to put my collection of miniature Blue Willow dishes inside.

But, after I got home and looked at the painting, I decided to leave it as is.  It is a very old piece and I really don't think the Blue Willow will look good in it.  So, now I will have to find some miniatures to go inside that will coordinate with the gorgeous painting it has.  Oh no, the start of another collection!

Don't you agree that I shouldn't paint it?

Now, to my second treasure of the day:

My baby Mourning Dove in the back yard tree.  The first nest they built they abandoned (I think because we were doing the construction on the porch and research said they would leave the nest if noises got too loud - I think the saws and hammering got to them).

So, they came right back and built another nest not four foot away from the first.

Their nests are so flimsy.  You could see the eggs right thru the nest.  But, I just saw this little head pop up yesterday.  I climbed a ladder to the top rung to get the first photo.  I know it's not a real good one, but I was afraid to get to close to it.  The baby has feathers already so it's been there awhile.

My two treasures for today!!

Enjoy!

Till next time, Judy

  2. You hit the jackpot with that cabinet and I think it's good that you leave it as is. It has a lot of personality!

My experience with mourning doves is that they like to be near or on structures, like your home. Have fun watching and learning!

  3. Your little cabinet is adorable Judy, and I would leave it just as it is. Interested in seeing what you end up collecting to put in it! Doves have also been nesting in our pines. It's been fun watching one pair gathering materials for the nest they are in the process of building. Looking forward to more family pics of yours!

  6. I don't think I could paint that cabinet either Judy. It's just so unique and beautiful. I can't wait to see how you decide to fill it.

Love the dove nest. With all the doves around "Bird Nest Cottage" I've never seen ones for the doves. I must start looking.

  7. the cabinet is lovely as is..I vote for leaving it that way! Your feathered friends are cute too - we have a nest of wrens just off our deck in the back - they are in a birdhouse so I can't see the little ones, but I can sure hear them when they are hungry!

  11. How tall is that adorable cabinet, Judy? It's a great find.

I think mourning doves are my favorite bird - they are so gentle and sweet. We have a pair on the property.

Lucky you to have that nest and that baby!

  12. No, I'd leave the chest as is at least until you've had your fill of it. We have a million doves around our house in Houston but I never see a nest. I've often wondered where the doves lay their eggs. Maybe they go to Oklahoma.
