What To Do In Your Spare Time????

While John was in the hospital and while he is recuperating, I needed something that I could just pick up and do, but put down at any moment.

YO YOS!!!!

I decided that I wanted to make a runner to go across the end of the bed in my guest room.  It has red - yes red - painted walls and the bedspread is black and white print.

I was at the Ethan Allen store years ago and saw a gorgeous bedspread made out of all black and white yoyos.  So, I made this little travel kit up and keep it in the car.

It has needle, thread, scissors and lots of circles cut out of black and white prints.  I can just pick it up and take in anywhere or in the car and make yoyos.  I started with a circle about 3" in diameter so I'm ending up with yoyos about 1 1/2" finished.

Do you know how many it takes to make anything out of
1 1/2" yoyos?  I might get this done before I die - maybe not.

I thought I would start putting some of them together and it would make me feel like I was getting something accomplished.

NOT!

This is what I have put together so far - it measures approximately 6" x 14"!

But, it will be beautiful when I finish!!

Have you ever made yoyos?

Enjoy!

Judy

  2. My mother in law made yo yos!! Their church used them to make arms and legs for little clowns they sold at the church bazaar.

  5. I have never made yoyos but get excited when I see them for sale, and have a couple vintage pieces, certainly no bigger than yours. That is going to be beautiful!

  6. Judy, Bless your sweet heart..I love those yo-yo's. I know what you mean. I used to carry a word power book around with me...so if I was in line or waiting I would work on my vocabulary. xoxo,Susie

  8. That's going to be beautiful, Judy! I haven't made anything with yoyo's because I just don't have the patience. But my ex Mother-in-Law made a queen size yoyo quilt with a center big basket and flowers. It was breathtaking. She was not living and her daughter had the quilt top. She had no idea what a special quilt it was. Hundreds, if not thousands, of yoyo's. Thanks again for stopping by today! XOXO

  9. I have never made them, but know someone who made a quilt for her daughter's bed. Daughter showed no interest in it after growing up and leaving home, so she donated it for a silent auction for a benefit. Ended up costing her daughter to get it back. Ooops!

  10. Yes, I have a yoyo lap size quilt.
I use it to cover my freezer top.
I love yours in the black and white, Judy!

  13. I've only made a few yo yo's in my life, but I have an idea how long it would take to make a quilt. I guess that's why we mostly see yo yo pillows in antique shops! You can change your mind and turn yours into a pillow or doll blanket if you get tired of working on it, right?

  14. A friend once cut out THOUSANDS of circles of fabric for me and then made HUNDREDS of yo yo's. I used them for crafting and still have a basket full. I sold a whole stack of circles on eBay and hope someone made something wonderful with them!

  15. I love these black and white yo yos! My aunt used to make them but not sure what she used them for. I have seen yo yo quilts and have wondered if they are mounted on a backing or something as seems like the quilt would be a little airy with the spaces between the yo yos. I've made a few and put them on a little wall hanging that is "faux tufted". For anyone interested, there is a tutorial on my blog on how to make them. Just search for "yo yo". They are fun to make and your idea of a little travel kit inspires me to do the same.

  16. I have never made them.
I think the quilt will look wonderful in your red room though! (When you finish!)

  19. It looks like a wonderful way to keep you entertained during those long hospital hours. I swear time in the hospital goes twice as slow than real time.

  20. Love yoyos, after my young daughter passed, our two little granddaughters (8 & 9yrs) and I made them endlessly, placing a vintage button in the center of each. We created a quilt of 750 memories. Love your black and white ones!!

  21. It's going to be gorgeous next to those red walls! I have made many yo yo's, I've used them in my embroidery and crazy quilting, and years ago made yo yo clown dolls. Remember those!?

  22. Hi Judy....I LOVE making and using yo-yo's. They are very therapeutic for one's sanity, I have found. LOL. I am sure I have made 1000's of them through the years but have never completed anything larger than a pillow. I do love the idea of a coverlet type item to put across the end of the bed. Your idea is wonderful. Whenever I finish a quilt, I handsew several yo-yo's on to the label I place on the back of the quilt.
Yo'yo's are a great idea from the heyday of scrap quilting.

  23. I love the idea of putting a button in the center of each one and calling up a memory to go with it. Sweet idea. I made a "yo-yo" coverlet many years ago. When I started mine I'd never heard of them before, just seen one. I didn't know what they were called and they reminded me and my kids of a pucker and a kiss, so we called them puckers and now it's a "pucker quilt". I didn't put a back on it, so it's more of a coverlet. I used it as pickup work through the 11 years it took me to finish it. There were puckers from little dresses my mother made me when I was little, puckers from maternity clothes I made myself when I was pregnant with my own children, puckers from my dad's shirts and then later more from my husband's shirts. Pieces of Mama's homemade kitchen curtains are in there and baby clothes from my own babies. Now my kids fight over who should get it when I'm not here anymore. Guess I'll have to make another one. My puckers/yo-yos were slightly bigger and there were almost 300 of them. The finished product covers the top of a king size bed without hanging over the edges. I love the two-tone black and white idea. Maybe that will be my next one.

  27. OH Judy, what beautiful work. I've never made them as sewing is not my thing. I think I even sent Brenda some I'd picked up long ago. But they would make passing the time in the hospital a little easier. Sometimes I find when I knit it calms my mind down, and I know it does when I'm painting. Anything to help us out.

  29. What a super idea to have a travel kit! Yoyos are the perfect little thing to work on when you have some spare time; you are brilliant!

I do love black and white. Your idea of creating a runner in just those colors makes me drool! I think I will need to round up some spare fabric and create my own "on the go" yoyo kit. Thanks for sharing this idea!

  30. Yes, it will be beautiful when done. Love the fabrics you are using. I love black and white.

  35. That is so very sweet, Judy. My Mom and Gramma made tons of those when I was a kid. I think my Gramma had a quilt made out of them but I don't know what happened to it. Glad you had something to keep you occupied while John was being ministered to--xo Diana
