My Bargain Bulbs

I was at Wal Mart a few days after Christmas and beside the check out stand they had these boxes of bulbs left over from the holidays.

So, I bought one of Paperwhites and one Amaryllis.

When I got home and opened the boxes, the amaryllis had already grown outside of the box.  I didn't know if it would still bloom or not.  These were amazing in that they had a little block of loam in the bottom which you added a cup of water to and it instantly filled the flower pot with rich dirt.  So, I planted the bulbs and quite honestly, I was not even sure I put them in right side up.

A gardener I am not!!

But, the amaryllis stem started growing like a weed.  There were two stalks of the amaryllis.  It just grew almost overnight.

This one stalk had four huge flowers on it.

Hurray!  I spent four dollars for both boxes and I have certainly enjoyed them both.

I have been under the weather all week with a respiratory virus which included a trip to the Urgent Care.  They of course, tested me for the Flu - which I did not have.  So, I've just had the fever, coughing and sneezing all week and have spent most of it in bed.  Bella loves for me to spend that much time in bed.  LOL She does expect me to get up and let her out occasionally and feed her.

But, I think I am on the mend and really do need to get busy updating my Etsy shop for Spring.

  7. I told you which end of the bulbs to face up, but looks like you got it right! No, you're not a gardener, my friend. But you sure are a decorator and a seamstress. And I know you're itching to get back to it. So rest up. Tell Bella the current circumstances are not permanent. (She will probably sulk.) And let's get out and do something soon!

  15. I gave amaryllis bulbs like that to my grandchildren when they were younger. The children loved watching them grow & bloom. I also gave one to an elderly lady & she loved it too.

  17. Judy, I have an amaryllis growing right now too. I bought it from Walmart after Christmas for $#. I wasn't sure it would grow and it was dormant for a few weeks, suddenly it is sprouting. Enjoy your burst of color.
    Hugs,

  27. Amazing that so much beauty comes out of an unattractive bulb. Mine are just starting to bloom...so pretty when everything outside is dead. Hope you get to feeling better soon!

  29. Hi Judy! I'm not sure if you know this or not but once your amaryllis bulb has bloomed and died back you can plant it in the ground. Completely cover it with soil. It may or may not do anything the first year but after that it should take off and give you lots of great color. Of course, I live in Georgia where the weather is much warmer so I may be steering you wrong(I hope not). My mom has been doing this for years. Not only do they bloom every year but they multiply. I purchased 10 bulbs after Christmas at Wal-Mart too. About half have already bloomed. I am going to be planting along the fence of my flower garden. Feel better real soon!!
