Paint A Watermelon Tray

This is a fun project for summer dinners and/or picnics.  I was looking for a wooden tray to paint and Brenda said - here, take this one, I'm not using it.  So, I did!

I sprayed the whole tray with Rustoleum White Primer.  Then I taped off the sections and painted the red and the black and white striped panel at one time.  Remember, I have told you this before, but, if you want a bright red color, first undercoat with hot pink.  Then a couple of coats of red will cover nicely.  If you just paint red over white, you'll be putting on 20 coats and it still won't look smooth.

After the red and the striped area dried, I retaped and painted the lime green and Kelly green area.

Then, I handpainted all of the rest of the tray black.

I painted black seeds freehand on the red area and sideloaded my brush with white and shaded the left side and added a white dot.  Do the dot with the end of your paintbrush.  It makes great dots.

I will put a few coats of polyacrylic varnish on it so it can be used for various things.  I used craft acrylic paints for this.

John and I are going to see Lion King tonight at the Performing Arts Center.  I've seen it once and can't wait to see it again.  If it comes to your town, be sure to see it.

Enjoy!

Till next time, Judy

  2. I love this! I'm also glad to hear the tip about painting hot pink under the red! I did not know that (but then I'm no painter). Are you getting tired of hearing how talented you are?

  5. You are amazing! This is not your typical watermelon! I love the seeds...you are an artist among many other things.

We saw the Lion King in Chicago and I loved it. One day on my lunch hour I happened to walk down the street that the back of the theater faced and I was able to stop and chat with Scar (in full make up and costume) while he was outside for a smoke!!
