Thanks to all of you who wrote with what you thought this piece was. I called it a Salt Cellar - WRONG!!
It is definitely a biscuit/cracker jar. Probably from the early 1950's. It is in perfect shape and has crazing on the bottom only. There is a marking on the bottom but it cannot be read with the crazing.
The ones listed similar to this were all made in Japan and several of them were labeled Majolica without any markings. So, I don't know about that for sure.
Thanks for your help figuring out what this gorgeous piece is.
Enjoy!
Till next time, Judy
I missed the earlier post- That is a GREAT looking piece-no matter WHAT it is! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteOh, my! That is really a beautiful piece. I would not have known what it was either.
ReplyDeleteI started to say biscuit jar, but it did not look big enough in the picture. I agree - it is a pretty piece whatever it is. Glad you found the answer.
ReplyDeleteThat is gorgeous, Judy. Love the colours. J
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous piece indeed Judy! The shape of it reminds me of a biscuit barrel (as it was called then) my mother had when I was young. It was a wedgewood one in beautiful blue and white. Yours is the most lovely colours, what a great find!

Judy- The red rimmed piece is called KINGS CROWN. It comes in clear, or with a gold rim and occasionally you find a silver rim, I have the same piece in milk glass too. think it was made in the 60s-70s. there is a ton of it because they made a lot of pieces. I have punch cups that have the red trim and some that are a frosted glass. the punch bowl is really nice too.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the etched looking glass is Heisey Glass. you have the best flea market there. I would agree that the ceramic jar is probably a biscuit jar or what we call a cookie jar. can you make out any of the writing at all, even a partial word on the bottom. would be interested to know. hope your husband is doing better.
I thought it was a biscuit jar also and saw others mentioned it. It's a lovely piece for sure. I only know from seeing them on others blogs!
ReplyDeletehugs, Linda
Are you going to keep it.. or sell it? I love it!

A biscuit jar...just like in Downton Abbey! How amazing! What a wonderful treasure!
ReplyDeleteYesterday when I read your post I knew it wasn't a salt cellar but I couldn't tell you what it was. Just now when I clicked on your post and saw the picture biscuit jar popped into my head. I have a green one that I love. The handle is gone but I love it just the same. I keep tea bags in mine.

Your biscuit jar is so pretty. I would not have guessed that it was used for that purpose.

ReplyDeleteOh my I read your earlier post and saw the great things you purchased...oh I love so many of them, but the oil painting of the old house really caught my eye. We live in an old house and I'm drawn to photos and paintings of them.

Love this cracker jar. My grandmother used her banana cookie jar as a cracker jar for saltines, ritz etc. I wish that I had her cookie jar. What fun! It is so beautiful! Thank you again for the little owl. I finally got a chance to thank you and the ladies publicly on my blog. You are welcome to head over there and check it out :) Have a wonderful night, Holly
