My Experience With Garden

I am not a gardener - as hard as Brenda tries, it's just not working with me.

I purchased this wonderful table at Habitat for $15.00 a few weeks ago.  It has a metal bottom and a Formica top.  As you can see in the above photo, I covered the top with a heavy duty oilcloth in a red and white check and moved it up close to the house so I would have it handy for projects.

I bought some new flowers at Lowe's including this beautiful balloon flower.  I carefully planted each of these in containers following Brenda's instructions using pinecones in the bottom to save on Potting Soil.  I got one big pot done with two purple plants and a yellow one.  I'm not big on names of flowers.

I got this really large Variegated Oregano on sale for $3.00 because it was really dry and neglected.  It looks pretty good for a couple days of water and TLC.

Supplies include, of course, a Sonic Diet Coke.

I also decided to make my Fairy Garden for this year.  I had this cute little metal wagon I had gotten somewhere and planted some small, low growing plants.  I did have John make nail holes in the bottom for water drainage.  It's pretty full!

I added some itsy bitsy clay flower pots and a pair of bright yellow rubber boots - I think they are called Welties???

It'll be fun to see everything grow (I hope).

Then I decided to clean out my flower bed around my little weeping cherry tree.  It has plants that are doing great, but I wanted to make a border out of vintage china saucers.  So, I start digging and cleaning it out.

That lasted about 5 minutes and I ran upon a snake.  It seemed like it was about 6 foot long, however, John said it was a tiny garden snake.  I am petrified of snakes of any size and kind.

So, that's probably the end of my gardening for this year.

I'll tend to the plants on the table next to the back door.  The border will have to wait unless John decides to do it for me.

I told you - I'm not a gardener!

Enjoy!

Judy

  1. It looks to me like your plants are doing just fine. I like your table, and the fairy garden is adorable. I hope you show us pictures if you get your saucers set in place for a border. I'm still chuckling about your 6 foot long garden snake!

  2. Well for a non-gardener you seem to be doing pretty darn good! Love your fairy garden and dive right back into weeding that border, snakes are lovely critters :O)

  3. Looks like you are doing fine! Haven't seen any pictures of your cute little garden cottage/craft cottage for awhile. Are you still using it? That table with the oil cloth is a great idea... have been trying to get my husband to make me a potting bench, but something like this might just do fine for me.

  4. Judy, That was a good deal on the table. I love your little fairy garden. Yes, Brenda is a wonderful gardener. I do not mind snakes , if I am the one sneaking up on the other. LOL. xoxo, Susie

  5. Judy, I am laughing about the snake. I would have been out of there, too. I once had one jump out on to my arm when I was gardening. That stopped my gardening that year. Looks like your plants are doing good. xo Laura

  6. I think you did just fine with your planting and gardening.
    Love your fairy garden . . .
I would be inside in a flash if I saw a "six foot" snake too!

  8. You may not be a gardener but you are a wonderful painter and crafter! I don't like snakes either and we do get one once in a while so I really look closely before I put my hands in one of my flower beds. Enjoy your pots, you did a great job with them!

  9. Good Morning, I am catching up with my friends this morning. I don't like snakes any better then you do. If I was on the riding mower, I would try to run over them. I like your flowers and your table works really well. Your granddaughter is so cute and we do spoil them. Have a great day. Hugs and Prayers from Your Missouri friend.

  10. I'm no gardener either, Judy. By the time I'm done having to mow and use the weed eater, the last thing I want to do is fiddle with plants. I also just don't have the budget for, not only the plants, but all the dirt and accessories like pots. I love flowers, but would rather buy mine in the grocery store.

  11. I had to laugh! I am not much of a gardener either. The husband is the one with the green thumb.

  13. I love that table! I have a covered patio it would be perfect for but I can never figure out how to get big things here. The boots are called "Wellies" which is short for the Wellington Boot Co. I just wrote about them for a British website. The ones I wrote about were red with white dots. I tell ya, if I ever had money......

  14. I am so like you when it comes to gardening. nothing grows. If it does the deer eat it. I started doing the fairy gardens and they survive. I got carried away and even made my window boxes a little wild and crazy. I even put pots and a mason jar in the window box. But I love it . Now let's hope the people coming to see my house like it so well they buy the house. I love what you have your fairy garden planted in. It's adorable. Oh, I tried a garden in an old rusty wagon. I was sure the bottom would rust all the way out for drainage. In all this rain, it has gotten flooded. Not much left to it. Oh well. Hubby did put some drain holes in it. We'll see if it does any better. Snake, yep, I would be done in the garden for sure.

  15. Oh my Judy, I too have a huge fear of any kind of snake too, even the garden variety. I become a stuttering idiot if I see one and close my eyes if one should appear on a tv show as well. Childhood terrors. Love the copper baby buggy planter and your gardening table.

  16. Good luck with your table garden.

I wouldn't be too excited to come across a snake in my garden.

Thanks for the sweet words on my Blog Tour post.

  17. I think your garden table look great!! I don't like snakes at all...had one just chilling out in the dining room a few years ago. Have no idea how he got into the house, but I was so glad that my hubby was home to get it back outside.

  18. Oh, Judy, you are a delight! Your post is perfect. Your fairy garden is simple and adorable. It is a testament about you that you can show us that you are not the gardener that Brenda is. Most of us are not the gardener that Brenda is, that woman has a magical touch with plants. (& décor) Snakes are not my favorite gardening partners either. They are ick. Thank you for the laugh this morning.

  19. I love gardening and planting flowers but if I saw a snake, I'd be indoors for the rest of the day! A few years ago, I went to go pick up my watering can and a snake (a harmless garden one - but still!) popped up out of it! Gaaah! I screamed and threw the watering can up in the air and ran in the house. I'm sure if any of my neighbors saw me, they got a good laugh. Anyway, your potted flowers look so pretty! I love your little fairy garden.

  21. I'm not a successful gardener like Brenda either, but I do love to try and some of my plants make it. Love your fairy garden and the table is great!

  22. Oh Judy, that post gave me a chuckle. Oh my! A snake! I'd do the exact same thing as you-----run. And leave the gardening to table top! ha! You are funny. Susan

  23. I love to garden, but I am definitely not a fan of snakes, Judy! It would take a couple of weeks to get me back to that spot. I love your wagon fairy garden! It looks wonderful and, as long as you don't kill anything, I think you can consider yourself a gardener! : )

  24. I think you have made a fine start of it all! You all are so lucky to have that humidity. Out here in California, everything looks horrid. Dried up like popcorn as I always say. Nothing looks lush, just looks like they are barely hanging in.

  25. Judy, you are TOO funny! Mind you, if I ran into a snake, I'd run for the hills!! Your fairy garden looks lovely as do your purple pretties!

  26. Your plants look great, however if I saw a snake I would NEVER go back to the garden again. I am so afraid of them - they are only good on shoes or purses.
Your fairy garden is so cute love the little boots.

  30. My husband is the green thumb in our family. We had a landscaping business and I did what he told me to do, otherwise, I would be the one who killed everything. I tend to overwater or over love the plants/flowers to much (wink and smiles). I love your fairy garden, and ewwww on snakes. Blessings

  31. Love your fairy garden-those boots are the cutest things!! I always say I have a 'brown thumb' as I tend to kill plants!

  32. I love your red and white check table and all your plantings, Judy. What a shame the snake had to appear just then! It would put me off gardening if there were snakes among the plants!! Love the little fairy garden....no snakes in there, just cute little yellow wellies!
    Happy week!

  33. UGH a SNAKE!!!!! I would have freaked. The worst that's happened to me is a toad or two scaring me when I wasn't expecting to come upon one...

  34. I thought for years that I wasn't a gardener because I could barely keep anything alive and growing, but perseverance paid off and I kept at while I learned that I was watering some things too much and others not enough. Some flowers are just more hardy than others, too. I'm sure Brenda has given you good advice. Don't give up, Judy, if you like flowers! It will get better. That is, unless those snakes keep scaring you away. I love your fairy garden and your gardening table!

  35. Oh my dear Judy ~ we have more in common than you know. First of all, that fairy garden you created is precious. Love every bit of it! Now when it comes to snakes I am a pansy ~ AND I LIVE IN TEXAS OF ALL PLACES!!! If I should come across a snake (poisonous or not) I am heading for the safety of the house. Then I will probably get on the phone and call our realtor and ask her to find me a high rise ;-) I'm on your side with this one.

    Big Texas Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley
