I wanted to share a short little story about some of my loved heirlooms!!
My parents decided when the plant my Dad worked at closed abruptly they would buy and sell antiques for a living. They were only in their 50's. They had always had a love for antique and vintage pieces - especially dishes.
I sometimes wonder why I have so many dishes and then I remember - oh yea, Mom. She had enough china and crystal sets that she gave each of the four granddaughters each their own set of china and crystal.
She had a real obsession with Depression Glass. She had a group of friends who met once a month and they were called the Friday Lunch Bunch. They took turns hosting and she loved to set her table with a different pattern place setting of various colors and patterns of Depression Glass.
When my parents were both gone, we had their home, a house next door and two huge storage buildings full of vintage items to sort out.
We four girls decided to each make a list of ten items that we really wanted. The #1 was our first choice and went down from there. We did not share our lists with each other. If on the first round, someone had something you had on your list, they got it.
Now, for the shocker. Out of the list of 40 items, there were no repeats - in other words, we each got the ten items we wanted the most. Unbelievable, eh?
Of course, there was still much to be divided and we had no problems at all with that. My sisters are so amazing and I know Mom and Dad were so pleased with the way we handled things.
We had two Estate Sales and the first day of the first sale, a woman offered to buy the house. God is so good.
Now onto what I am working on at the present.
My tiny office off of my master bedroom will be done in this caramel and black combination. The plaid will be curtains for the sliding doors and the print will be used to upholster a small chair. FUN!!
Tomorrow a crew is coming to work on my yard. Because of the huge trees, I have a lot of bare spots. So, we'll see how they look after tomorrow.
I want to thank each of you for following along with me on this journey. At first I thought I was crazy for doing something this major at my age, but after conferring with my sisters and Tiff, I knew it was the right decision for us all.
All of your positive input has helped me so much. I thank each and every one of you for your support.
Enjoy the week ahead.
Judy
Judy, you have so many lovely things from you family. I love to hear how well you and your sisters divided things up, you can hear some ugly stories about this sometimes. I love following along on the journey with you.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Linda
Thanks Linda. I am very blessed to have awesome sisters. Thanks for following along on my venture.

Such a smart way to divide your parents stuff. So nice you all got what you wanted. So that's where your dish obsession came from. I have no idea where I got mine.
ReplyDeleteIt was amazing that out of all of those items, there were no duplicates. And it makes me feel a little better knowing where my obsession came from. LOL

Absolutely, we are never too old to make good changes. This looks like a very positive one for you. Wishing you loads of fun in the days ahead.
ReplyDeleteI have been so blessed in this move in that every minute of it has been so positive and wonderful.

Thanks for telling the story of your parents.. now I know where you learned to appreciate vintage and antiques! How lucky for you that your parents raised you in an antique store! What a dream! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteMakes for a good excuse to collect all kinds of things. LOL

When my Mom's Mom passed the siblings each packed a black plastic bag full of things they liked. They closed the bags and left the room and someone else moved the bags around. The sibs came back and by age picked a bag. Mom said she was happy with that. Then the sibs used their share of their Mom's estate to buy things from the estate they wanted. Mom wanted her Mom's Mink Coat (cold Alberta winters) and treasured it as long as she lived. Snippets of memories.
ReplyDeleteThank you Judy for sharing your memories, Treasures.

Aren't memories like that precious?

Hi Judy! So your love for vintage comes naturally! How nice your sisters and you were able to do this. So many families aren't so sweet. Can't wait to see your room when you're finished. The fabrics are very pretty.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Thanks Shelia. Hope you are doing better. Take it easy.

Isn't it wonderful when family gets along for things like that? My parents had a large collection of McCoy pottery. In January, 3 years after Mom passed away, we put it out on the table and just took turns taking what we wanted. So amiable and no hard feelings when it was all gone.
ReplyDeleteYou hear such horror stories of families really having a hard time during this. Sounds like a great idea.

Judy, it's nice to hear that your sisters all came together and handled things fairly when your parents passed away. I really like the red dishes. And I'm going to love your office in caramel and black combination. That will be so rich looking and pretty; totally office colors. I'm not sure what the depression glass is, so will have to look it up. I'm curious now. I'm glad to be following along this journey with you, Judy.
ReplyDeletelove, ~Sheri
Hi Sheri - Depression glass was made in many different colors and patterns. It's very interesting. I have the Madrid pattern in amber. My folks started the collection for me 40 years ago and it has grown and grown and grown.....

Thank you for sharing such a precious story, not only about your parents, but also about your sister's and God's presence in a time of trial! You are a brave woman to take on such a big venture but I'm sure God has given you strength and wisdom as you have made each decision. The color/fabric for your office is great, it will be fun to see how it all turns out! May you have a Blessed new week! Cindy xo
ReplyDeleteGod has certainly been with me every step of the way. Things have gone so smoothly that I know it is what John would have wanted me to do. Am anxious to get my little office done]
